Certificate in Patient Safety Science | Begins February 2021

The World Health Organisation has designated 2020-2030 as the Decade for Patient Safety. With RCPI’s Certificate in Patient Safety Science you will gain expansive expert knowledge and skills in this critical area. 

This comprehensive, eight-month programme will provide learners with the opportunity to gain the knowledge and skills to be able to build a patient safety strategy for change, and guidance on how to implement this strategy in the workplace. Teaching is delivered by internationally recognised experts incorporating interactive sessions, case-based discussions and online components.

Who is this Certificate for?

This comprehensive certificate has been designed for all healthcare professionals and those who are looking to improve patient safety within their healthcare settings.

What you will learn?

Attendees will learn cutting edge theories of safety based on the latest concepts, supported by improvement and implementation science to facilitate their becoming leaders and champions for patient safety. The Certificate is split into two key modules. Module 1 will introduce the science and theory of patient safety and its key concepts, while module 2 examines the practical application and methodologies of patient safety, including developing solutions.

On completion of the programme, participants will be able to:

• Demonstrate patient safety leadership skills, including how to influence clinical teams, management and governing structures and boards
• Design a risk management system to proactively address risk
• Analyse the need for redesign of health systems to allow change and opportunities for improvement
• Explain how using a systems approach can solve safety challenges
• Implement investigations of serious incidents using appropriate methodology
• Demonstrate how to interpret early warnings of potentially unsafe systems
• Define the criteria for psychological safety and healthcare worker safety
