  • A.G.M & Conference: On Monday 18th November 2019, the Probation SIG held their AGM & conference, entitled ‘Contemporary Issues in Criminal Social Work’. The conference, held in Probation Service HQ, focused on three primary themes: Acquired brain injury, dual diagnosis and child-to-parent violence. Aine Mc Guirk, IASW Chairperson opened the event and presentations were given by Aiden Trant, former Probation Officer & Medical Social Worker at National Rehabilitation Hospital, Dr. Declan Coogan, Psychotherapist and Lecturer at NUIG and Dr. Maire Oppeboen and Donal Ryan, CARMHA, Co. Tipperary. Vivian Geiran, then Director of the Probation Service opened the AGM and outlined the value of social work within probation practice.
  • Peer Discussion & Journal Club: This Dublin-based CPD activity provides an opportunity for members to meet on a monthly basis to discuss a journal article and talk about significant issues pertaining to criminal justice social work. It is currently suspended due to contact restrictions imposed as a result of the current public health pandemic and the Probation SIG committee are currently exploring options to continue to facilitate CPD for it’s members.
  • Representation at IASW Council Meetings: A member of the Probation SIG executive attends the council meetings.
