All You Wanted to Know about Practice Teaching but were Afraid to Ask

This CPD event will be of interest to social workers thinking about becoming a practice teacher as well as existing practice teachers.

9.30-10.10: Eleanor and Deirdre will explore the area of practice teaching looking at Deirdre’s experience as a practice teacher

10.10-10.25: Comfort break

10.25-11.05: Shane will present on his experience as a Practice Teacher, some of the themes and issues that have arisen and suggestions on how to successfully navigate placements.

Eleanor Kelly is a lecturer and Practice Learning Coordinator on the Master's in Social Work programme within the School of Political Science and Sociology, NUI Galway. Prior to this Eleanor was a Principal Social Worker in a CAMHS service and has worked in Social Work for over 30 years.  Eleanor completed her Masters in Systemic Psychotherapy in 2014.  Eleanor’s teaching and research areas of interest are practice teaching and learning and the continuing professional development of social work practice.

Deirdre O’Brien is an experienced practitioner with over 25 years’ experience in the areas of fostering and child protection. She is currently a senior practitioner in child protection in Galway. She has supervised a number of students over the years and have completed the Practice Teaching Supervision and Management course in NUIG in 2015 and took part in the EPPI programme 2016-2017.

Shane O’Meara is an experienced practitioner and practice teacher.  He has completed the Advanced Fieldwork Practice and Supervision course in UCC.  He has worked with teenagers at risk of being out of home, separated children seeking asylum, Young Person’s Probation Projects, child protection, fostering and currently works in adoption.  Shane has experience as a practice teacher and is currently Student Coordinator for Tusla Adoption Services in the South and West.
