This full day workshop is a collaboration between Barnardos and the IASW. It will be facilitated by Áine Costello and Miriam McAuliffe from Barnardos’ and puts a focus on the perspectives of children living with CDVA. It will address three key areas:

Áine Costello has worked in the field of social care for over 20 years, with the last decade focused on childhood domestic violence and abuse. As the National Coordinator, she is committed to raising awareness of children as victims in their own right and fostering a collective and collaborative approach across Ireland.
Aoife Farrell is the Project Leader for Barnardos South Cork City, where she oversees a dedicated team delivering targeted, intensive, trauma-informed family support services. A qualified social worker since 2012, Aoife brings over a decade of experience of direct work with children and families, as well as involvement with social work teaching and education.
In her current role, Aoife leads interventions for children affected by a range of complex experiences, with a growing focus on childhood domestic violence and abuse—an area of increasing prevalence within Barnardos’ services.
Aoife is deeply committed to Barnardos’ mission of implementing a trauma-informed approach in all aspects of service delivery, grounded in the belief that childhood lasts a lifetime. Her work reflects a strong dedication to helping the most vulnerable children in society achieve their full potential—regardless of their family circumstances, race, class, gender, or disability—through compassionate, inclusive, and evidence-informed support.
Miriam McAuliffe is Coordinator of the Barnardos Childhood Domestic Abuse and TLC Kidz project in Cork. Miriam has been working directly with children, young people and families impacted by domestic violence and abuse for the past 4 years in her current role but has been supporting children, young people and families over 25 years in a variety of roles addressing a range of challenges faced by children, young people and families including domestic violence & abuse.
Miriam is dedicated to supporting children and families but is particularly passionate about:
- Raising awareness of child and young people as victims of domestic violence in their own right
- Raising awareness of the impact of domestic violence and coercive control on the child
- Our shared responsibility in recognising and supporting children and young people and their families experiencing domestic violence and coercive control.
